How to Get an Accurate Deck Quote Before You Build
Learn what goes into a deck estimate and how project size, materials, site conditions, stairs, railings, and other details affect your final price.

An accurate quote is mostly a function of accurate inputs. When a contractor knows the footprint, height, material, railing run, stair count, and site conditions, they can price the job confidently. When they are guessing, they either pad the number or discover problems later.
Start with a real footprint
Rough guesses like "about the size of a two-car garage" are where estimates go wrong. Map the outline of the deck instead. If mapping is not practical, enter the width and depth directly. Either way, you are giving the contractor a number rather than an impression.
Details that change the price the most
- Height off the ground, and whether the deck attaches to the house
- Decking and railing materials
- Linear feet of railing needed — not every side always needs it
- Staircases, steps per run, and handrails
- Whether an existing deck is being removed, resurfaced, or kept
- Backyard access for materials and equipment
- Slope, drainage, and anything in the way such as trees, AC units, or utilities
Photos do a lot of work
A few photos of the project area, the connection point at the house, existing framing, and the path from the driveway to the backyard let a contractor spot conditions no form can capture. Rotted ledger boards, undersized joists, or a gate too narrow for a skid steer all change the plan.
What an online estimate can and cannot do
An online estimate priced from a real contractor's price book tells you whether your project is in range before anyone visits. It cannot confirm structural condition, code requirements, footing depth, or permit scope. Those are verified onsite, and the final price may change if the actual conditions differ from what you submitted.
That is the honest sequence: build the project online, get one number from the contractor assigned to your territory, then have them verify everything in person.

- What is included and excluded in the written scope?
- Who pulls the permit and schedules inspections?
- What framing, fasteners, and footing details are specified?
- What is the payment schedule and the timeline?
- What warranty covers labor, and what covers the materials?
